Technology is the human race’s ability to convert natural resources into tools and devices that increase comfort, quality of life, and productivity. Invented since prehistoric times, technology has helped humans become more self-sufficient, more efficient in production, and has allowed people to communicate with one another globally. In the past, technological progress was very slow and limited to items such as the wheel and fire, but as the invention of printing and the Internet have eliminated geographic barriers, modern technology has accelerated at a tremendous rate.
Throughout history, the relationship between culture and technology has been characterized as synergistic, symbiotic, co-dependent, and co-influential. It is thought that this dynamic first occurred at the dawn of humanity with the invention of simple tools, and continues with today’s technologies. In other words, technology influences and is influenced by societal issues/factors such as economics, values, ethics, institutions, groups, and the environment.
The ubiquity of technology has enabled it to be used for both good and bad purposes. In the workplace, for instance, it has improved productivity and reduced physical labor through automation and the use of software programs. However, it has also led to an increase in the amount of time spent on digital media, which can result in social disconnection and isolation from one’s community and loved ones.
Similarly, the development of technology has also made it easier to transmit malicious malware that can steal private information and cause significant financial loss. It is important for parents to understand the risks of children using technology, and to monitor their child’s use of it.
